The Official Gazette of the Canary Islands includes the Resolution by which 1,13 million euros in subsidies from the Rural Development Program (PDR) for the first installation of a total of 39 young farmers during the year 2014.
According to the regional Executive, These credits are co-financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) in a 85%, by the Canarian Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fishing and Waters in a 8,72%, and by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment in a 6,28%.
This action aims to encourage the installation as owners or joint owners of holdings, individually or associative, which leads to a structural improvement and modernization of the same, contributing in this way to the generational change in the sector and, as ultimate goal, the fixing of the population in rural areas.
The subsidies are aimed at covering expenses derived from the purchase of agricultural machinery, of investments in irrigation automation, fertilizer injection systems, lease or purchase of agricultural land, overheads, conductions, hydroponic facilities, etc.
In addition to the management of these funds, The Ministry of Agriculture has promoted the incorporation of young people into the agricultural and livestock sector by providing a total of 210 courses.
These courses have been attended by 4.176 young farmers who intend to settle or have recently settled in the sector, and who have wanted to expand their knowledge about innovations and new techniques to apply to their crops.
With this training program, and along with lines of economic aid –credits and subsidies– aimed at young people, se pretende potenciar la creación y consolidación de puestos de trabajo, así como la renovación del empresariado, todo ello con el objetivo de contribuir a la modernización de las explotaciones agrarias y de establecer un importante vehículo de transferencia de avances tecnológicos al sector.
