The awards distinguished the ten highest quality wines on the island, falling into its various categories in the Las Tirajanas wineries, Los Berrazales, The Lilies, Agala and Dulcelena.
The president of the Cabildo de Gran Canaria, José Miguel Bravo de Laguna, delivered to the headquarters of La Casa del Vino, in the municipality of Santa Brígida, the awards for the best wines obtained from the land during the XIX Official Wine Contest of Gran Canaria.
The official tasting of the XIX Official Wine Contest of Gran Canaria took place, the past 19 June, in the Literary Cabinet of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with a participation of 16 bodegas, with 17 samples in the red category, 9 samples in the dry blank category and 9 samples in the semi-dry category, semisweet, sweets and liquor.
For the first time, the public participated directly in the contest. To do this, the winemakers offered their wines, The same day, 19 June, in twelve stands that were installed in the Plaza Hurtado de Mendoza. The Official Gran Canaria Wine Contest has been held annually since the year 1996 in response to the demand of the Wine Sector for the recognition of the quality of its wines.
The development of the tastings was evaluated and directed by a qualifying jury. The contest is public and all wineries on the Island that meet the requirements established by the Denomination of Origin Gran Canaria can participate.. The tasting is carried out by the "blind tasting" procedure with a qualifying jury made up of 12 professional tasters at the regional level.
The wines are organoleptically evaluated by the Qualifying Jury (Tasting Committee), rating the wines in the visual phase, olfactory and gustatory. The form accredited by the International Office of Vine and Wine and adapted by the National Institute of Denominations of Origin is used as an element of evaluation of the wines..
Three prizes are established in the Young Red categories, Dry white Semi-sweet, sweets and liquor.
It also includes the award for the ‘Best image and presentation’, where all the elements that constitute labeling are valued, including, the design of the bottle itself.
