The Tomato Table of Extremadura has decided to carry out measures that allow greater efficiency in the activity.
The president of the Tomato Table of Extremadura, Juan Francisco Blanco, has highlighted that the commitment reached will be reflected in concrete measures such as enhance the organization of the sector, the improvement of transportation that allows lower costs for the export of the product, the recovery of R&D&I projects “as a reference” in the sector, as well as the streamlining of agri-environmental aid.
The Minister of Agriculture of the Junta of Extremadura, Santos Jorna, has pointed out that all these measures will allow the sector to improve that “generates vital wealth for the region in the social sphere, economic and environmental”.
On the other hand, The president of the Board has highlighted the good campaign developed in 2015 in which the 2.000.000 of tons, with an estimated price of between 75-78 euros for each, that is to say the 67 percent of the quantities contracted throughout the country.
These good results derive from the exceptional climatic conditions and the technicalization and professionalization of the sector, which has been a boost for the producers who already planted the first bushes in spring, especially in the Las Vegas area of Guadiana where the 90 percent of regional harvest.
In Extremadura exist 23.700 hectares of tomato, what it represents the 70 percent of the planted area in Spain in 2015 and an increase in 20 percent on the hectares registered in the campaign 2014.
In the previous campaign, in which a production of 1,8 million tonnes, with a average performance of 93.500 kilos per hectare, some two hundred million euros were mobilized in the region between production, transformation and commercialization.
The Tomato Table It is made up of tomato producers and processing industries and has among its members objectives to ensure transparency and compliance with contracts, as well as the quality of the product and the price paid for the tomato.
