THEY WILL BE CARRIED OUT DURING THE TURN OF THE PRESIDENCE OF SPAIN.
The member countries of the European Union will review the quality standards of agricultural products and the requirements for designations of origin in the first half of 2010, coinciding with the current presidency of Spain.
This was agreed by the Ministers of Agriculture of the Twenty-seven during the conference “The future of the quality policy of agri-food producers”, held in Prague, and in which they debated what would be the most appropriate changes in community quality standards
The aim of the review is to increase the value of European quality product models to consumers and, to do this, The EU intends to put food certification systems such as those of designations of origin to trial, protected geographical identities or those that are accredited as obtained from organic production.
The Twenty-Seven intend to reform the protection of some famous names such as, for example, the one from Jerez, and whose use by third countries has caused some litigation. The launch of this review during the first half of next year has already provoked some debate among the Twenty-seven since, while the European Commissioner for Agriculture, Mariann Fischer , wants to simplify the rules, Member States choose to maintain current systems.
