Canary ecological deficitBUT NEVERTHELESS, THE CANARY ISLANDS ARE AMONG THOSE THAT PRODUCE THE LEAST CO2 EMISSIONS INTO THE ATMOSPHERE.

The Canary Islands are one of the Autonomous Communities that present the greatest deficit in their ecological footprint along the Mediterranean corridor. (Murcia, Valencian Community and Catalonia) and Basque Country, whose ecological deficit is greater than 7,7 global hectares per inhabitant. On the other hand, the autonomous communities of Extremadura, Castilla y León, Castilla-La Mancha and Madrid are the only ones in Spain that present “surplus” in its ecological footprint, measured in global hectare per inhabitant, i.e., less generation of waste and pollution.

With a deficit of between 2,5 and 4 global hectares per inhabitant are found in Andalusia, Cantabria and Asturias, and with a deficit less than 2,5 global hectares per inhabitant are Galicia, Navarre and La Rioja.
The data is extracted from the ecological balance of the autonomous communities that has been prepared by the Government of Extremadura according to data from the Ministry of Agriculture of 2009.

Regarding CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, The ecological balance shows that the communities that contribute the least to these emissions are La Rioja (0,67% of the country's total emissions); Navarra (1,79%); Cantabria (1,91%); Estremadura (2,32%); Murcia (2,47%); Balearics (2,83%) and the Canary Islands (3,99%).

At the other end of the scale are the communities that contribute the most to the C02 emission of the entire country., headed by Andalusia (15,36%); Catalonia (13,10%); Castilla y León (9,72%); Galicia (7,87%), and Valencia (7,84%).

The communities in the central part of the table in terms of the percentage of net emissions in 2011 They are Asturias (6,62%); Madrid (6,41%); Castilla - La Mancha (5,92%); Aragon (5,50%) and Basque Country (,5,43%).
