LOW TEMPERATURES, RAINS AND FREEZES IN OTHER PRODUCING AREAS PROMOTE THE INCREASE.
The month of January has allowed the Canary Islands tomato export sector to recover prices in European markets. The weather has been the great ally of Canarian producers, both to compete with the rest of the producers and to promote greater production and quality.
However, The Canarian tomato sector appears cautious: “the result of the harvest is decided when the line is crossed, at the end of the campaign”. However, producers do recognize some satisfaction with the increase in the price of productions.
Regarding the crops, The climate has been kind to the Canarian productions.. The technicians express themselves in the terms of “For now everything is under control”, but they insist that we must not let our guard down.
The pests that stalk tomatoes seem to have also taken a break. The dreaded Tuta, although it is still present, has not yet reached the dimensions of a virulent plague. The cultural and prevention measures that are being developed by farmers contribute to this..
Some Canarian producers recognize that, sometimes, inclement weather in a certain producing area, benefit another. But the harvest should not be based on this situation, “since tomorrow we could be the ones who suffer the adversities of the climate”.
With everything, The harvest is preparing to approach the halfway point of the current campaign with some optimism, but with many uncertainties about the realization of the promised aid that has not yet materialized.
