The forest area of the Canary Islands It has increased in 79.000 hectares in 25 years, as reported today in the Canary Islands Parliament Minister of Territorial policy, Sustainability and safety of the Canary Islands, Snow Lady Barreto Hernandez.
The data confirming this important growth experienced by the forest area in the Canary Islands are taken from the last National forest inventory (2002) prepared by the Ministry of agriculture, Food and environment collecting an increase of 68.756,97 hectares in the province of Las Palmas and 8.907,45 acres in Santa Cruz de Tenerife with respect to the previous inventory of 1992, which means that in the Canary Islands the forest area in that period grew in 77.664,42 hectares.
On the other hand, According to the Canary Islands forest information system (SIFCAN), in the period 2004-2014 they have repopulated in the province of Las Palmas 521,89 hectares and 875,11 in the province of Tenerife, resulting in a total of 1.397 acre stocked.
In conclusion, in the last 25 years, with the data that are, the forest area in the Canary Islands has increased in 79.061,42 hectares. This increase is influenced by not only the actions of restocking, but also the abandonment of agricultural soils.

At last, the Counselor said in his speech that both the last national forest inventory and forest map of Spain are drawn up by the State and they need an update since the last data are from 2002.
To this end, the Ministry of agriculture, Food and environment is planning to undertake work in the Canary Islands this year 2016 and to address the new national forest inventory in 2017.
Throughout the month of February, technicians from the General protection of nature address, Island Councils and the Ministry will meet to begin work.
