The local cooperative and the City Council celebrate the start of the season with the third solidarity auction for the benefit of Cáritas.
Last week the third edition of the solidarity auction of the first batch of tomatoes from El Perelló was held, Valencia. This is an action organized by the City Council of this town to promote the start of the season for this product, which this year expects to increase its production compared to last season..
The auction was held at the headquarters of the Cooperativa Unión Protectora de El Perelló (Unipro) and it was attended by representatives of twenty restaurants and businesses in the area, who bid on the first batch of 50 kilos of this product.
"It's a tomato, more than a vegetable, looks like a fruit; it has a lot of meat, very little seed, and when you put it on your palate it's nice to eat it; it is a very big tomato, is more uniform than hybrids, and for the view you also take it away”, highlighted Vicente Villega, president of Unipro.
“In the past, it was in high demand because of how early it came out.; today the quality of the tomato is being valued more, because there is already a lot of early in Spain but, with our quality, We doubt there will be another.", José Miguel Fos pointed out, mayor of El Perelló.
The auction ended with the bid of 900 EUR, made by the Restaurant Llobarro, from the same town. “It is a charity action in favor of Cáritas de El Perelló; the money will go to many needy people in the form of food and basic necessities”, Mayor Fos pointed out.
“We spend the tomato in many dishes, for all; we use it in salads, baked for side dishes, we use it with bread, we caramelize it for desserts… From the beginning until the end of the season, it is a star product in our store”, assured Mª Dolores C, owner of the Llobarro Restaurant.
