The Canarian company “Caracoles Canarios SL”, has invested in this farm 100.000 euros and expect to achieve their maximum production targets by the end of this year. Its owner, Carlos Ledesma, has reported that the assembly of this farm began a year ago and its activity began with half a million reproductive snails brought from Seville, has already created seven jobs.

The promoters of the Agüimes helicicultural farm, located in Vargas, have 13.500 square meters, of which 10.000 they are dedicated to reproduction and breeding and the rest are occupied by refrigerators and laboratories.

The facility breeds two types of snails, the Hélix Aspersa Muller and the Otala Punctata (or cabrilla), and they are marketed, alive, in bags of one, three and five kilos.

carac2Canarian snails from Agüimes, first breeding and distribution farm in the Canary Islands and the largest in Spain, puts on sale the first 1.000 kilos at a very competitive price compared to Moroccan, which is the one that is marketed in the islands. It is organic and everything was praised in the first tasting that was held at the El Alpendre restaurant.

Carlos and Borja Ledesma, brothers of 24 and 26 Agüimes years, they were tasting some good traditional-style snails one day when they came up with the idea of investigating this field because, as they understood, the snails that were eating came from outside, from Morocco specifically and arrived frozen.

The brothers spent two years preparing, studying, visiting farms in the Peninsula until they were sufficiently trained. It was in May of last year when they began the assembly of their first plant for the breeding and distribution of the live common cabrilla snail and a novelty in the Canarian market, the propeller sprinkles, bigger and meatier and required by gourmet palates.

Mollusks “have already borne their first fruits with the first consignment, that came out last week to the market”, noted Ledesma.
