THE BOARD OF SPOKESPERSONS OF THE CORPORATION AND REPRESENTATIVES OF ALL THE COOPERATIVES HAVE MADE PUBLIC AN INSTITUTIONAL DECLARATION.
The Cabildo and the banana farmers of the Island have joined together to stop “an unjustified attack on the banana sector of the Canary Islands” with the implementation of an aid system that “would end the main engine of the economy” insular.
The members of the Board of Spokespersons and representatives of all the cooperatives on the Island appeared this Monday at a press conference to make public an institutional statement, unanimously agreed, support for the banana sector in which they claim “el mantenimiento de la ficha financiera destinada a los productores plataneros canarios que está incorporada al Posei” So what, recuerdan, “provenía de su Organización Común de Mercado”.
El presidente de la Corporación, Anselmo Pestana, estuvo acompañado en el acto por el vicepresidente de la institución, el popular Carlos Cabrera; la nacionalista Guadalupe González, y el socialista Basilio Pérez, junto a responsables de las cooperativas Cupalma, Agusa, Europlátano, Covalle, Prosperidad, Teneguía, Volcán de San Juan y Plátanos Taburiente.
La declaración institucional propone al Gobierno de Canarias que “promueva los ajustes necesarios en la programación anual del Posei de tal forma que, modificando el Régimen Específico de Abastecimiento (REA), con la colaboración de las organizaciones agrícolas y ganaderas más representativas y los operadores del REA, se contribuya de forma más eficaz al desarrollo de nuestras producciones agrarias, tal y como ha ocurrido ya en los años 2012 and 2013, en los que se han transferido desde este programa 23 million euros”.
En el documento también se propone que “en el marco del Posei, se proceda a adaptar el Programa de Apoyo a las Producciones Agrarias de Canarias a las necesidades de nuestras producciones de tal forma que la totalidad de la financiación comunitaria que se disponga pueda llegar a aquellas”.
En cumplimiento del acuerdo de la Comisión Europea del año 2009, solicitan que “Both the Government of Spain and the Government of the Canary Islands financially provide the so-called complementary Posei in such a way that aid is increased for agricultural and livestock production in the Canary Islands.”.

THE BOARD OF SPOKESMANS OF THE HEIFER. ISLAND COUNCIL OF LA PALMA, BY UNANIMOUSNESS OF ITS MEMBERS, HAS AGREED, TODAY, THE FOLLOWING INSTITUTIONAL DECLARATION:
Nobody can ignore the importance that bananas have for the Canary Islands and in particular for the Island of La Palma., where this crop accounts for around 125.000 tons, that is to say the 85% of agricultural production and 40% of the island's cultivated area, that is to say that the 34,6 % of the bananas produced in the Canary Islands come from the island of La Palma, with the obvious repercussion that this has for the island economy.
On the other hand, It must be kept in mind that from a social point of view, banana cultivation generates a significant number of jobs that depend directly and indirectly on this crop and that for the island it represents almost the 10% of full-time jobs, representing more than 20% of labor contracts for some municipalities of our island.
It should also be noted that the maintenance of banana cultivation affects all costs in the food sectors., trade, inputs and services from all over the Canary Islands, taking into account that if it were not the transport of bananas to the peninsula, mainly, the goods transported to the Canary Islands - as determined by a recent study by the University of La Laguna- would become more expensive by around 5%.
In addition, It is necessary to highlight the need to maintain the full amount of the POSEI token assigned to bananas, to face the serious competition from bananas in our traditional markets as a result of the tariff reduction that benefits this fruit, due to the agreements signed and which establish a reduction in said tariffs up to 75 €/ Tm., compensation agreed within the European Union for this purpose and, that if it weren't for that, said economic amount would not be incorporated into the POSEI, as it was not before.
For all these reasons, y estimando que se ha procedido a un injustificado ataque al sector platanero de Canarias, confundiendo a la opinión pública al abogar por la ejecución de un sistema de ayudas que, definitely, acabaría con este sector, principal motor de la economía de nuestra isla, la Junta de Portavoces del Excmo. Cabildo Insular, en línea con el acuerdo plenario de 12 July of 2013, acuerda;
First: Manifestar la irrenunciable petición del mantenimiento de la ficha financiera destinada a los productores plataneros canarios que está incorporada al POSEI y que, no podemos obviar, provenía de su Organización Común de Mercado.
Segundo: Proponer al Gobierno de Canarias que promueva los ajustes necesarios en la programación anual del POSEI de tal forma que, modificando el Régimen Específico de Abastecimiento (REA), con la colaboración de las organizaciones agrícolas y ganaderas más representativas y los operadores del REA, se contribuya de forma más eficaz al desarrollo de nuestras producciones agrarias, tal y como ha ocurrido ya en los años 2012 and 2013, en los que se han transferido desde este programa 23 million euros.
