SO, ONE TON OF TOMATO PRODUCED IS EMITTED 0,5 TONS OF CO2 VS. 0,6 OF A TON OF BANANA.

This achievement makes the Archipelago one of the most efficient European regions in the fight against climate change in terms of caring for its agricultural practices..

The Global Nature Foundation, coordinator of a project funded by the European LIFE program, which has been taking place simultaneously in four EU countries since September 2010 until December 2013, has made public its results.

The engineer in charge of the project, Jose Luis Fernandez, pointed out that greenhouse gases can be reduced, doing so in an economically and technically viable way.

In this way, They have managed to make the tomato emit 0,5 tons of CO2 per ton produced, while the banana has issued between 0,5 and 0,6 tons of CO2 per ton produced.

Fernández highlighted that in order to reduce by 20% greenhouse gases have been worked on “very efficiently”, in the transportation of the fruit and all the cultivation tasks have been planned in advance.

Also, recalled that agriculture in the Canary Islands is subject to European regulations, national and regional regulations related to the restriction of water use, of phytosanitary products and hydrogenated fertilizers in order to maintain the quality of the aquifers.

The director of the Global Natural Foundation in the Canary Islands, Antonio Rodriguez, has defended that, being efficient from an environmental point of view and taking care with the use of water, energy and transportation, you can save and change the agricultural model.

“With four changes in our habits we continue to be very efficient”, said the director of the foundation, who has advocated using the environmental advantages of Canarian products to sell more in Europe.
