This advice on agricultural technological development and research and advisory body, encourages the participation of the sector in R&D&i and the transfer of results.
The President of the Canary Islands, Fernando Clavijo, has presided over the constitution of the Agrarian Research Advisory Council, consultative and advisory body of the regional Executive in research and technological development in the primary sector, organically attached to the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and Waters of the Canary Islands Government, “and who will lead the collaboration between the primary and research sectors, including universities, through the ICIA Advisory Council.
This is made up of the Agriculture Minister, Narvay Quintero, who is your president, by the president of the Canary Islands Institute of Agricultural Research (ICIA), Nazaret Diaz, who serves as vice president, and representatives of business organizations and agricultural professional associations with the greatest presence in the Archipelago, spokespersons for the ministries with powers in matters of economics and scientific research, and a member of the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria and the University of La Laguna, that act as vowels.
With the recovery of this organ, created in 1995, but met for the last time in 2008, The Canary Islands Executive seeks to involve the primary sector when defining the Archipelago's priorities for agricultural research and promoting its participation in R&D&I. “The transfer of knowledge is fundamental for rural development and this Government is committed to the advancement and consolidation of this activity”.
Among its powers are, assist the Ministry in agricultural research and technological development policies and propose to the counselor the priority lines in these matters and in other matters related to the functions of the Canary Institute of Agricultural Research, know the ICIA budget, report on their action plans and propose scientific-technical activities for their possible incorporation into the Institute's action program, know the results of the actions developed by the ICIA and propose the performance of external evaluations, and promote the raising of resources for this organization.
Also, will be in charge of designing the lines of action related to the program of scientific-technical courses and seminars for the training of specialists in agroecology, disease and pest prevention, tropical fruit growing including improving the quality and competitiveness of products, soils and irrigation, improvement of the production of small ruminants along with their productions; and the writing and execution of applied research projects, relatively short-lived, to solve specific problems that arise in agriculture and livestock in the Canary Islands, that do not have financing from the State or the European Union.
The Advisory Council will meet, As minimum, once a year and as many times as necessary for the smooth running of research activities in the Canary Islands.
