The general director of Nature Protection, Pedro Cuesta, has closed the Grazing and Biodiversity technical conferences: a complex relationship, organized by your department with the collaboration of the Institute of Canarian Studies, the General Directorate of Livestock of the Government of the Canary Islands and the Canary Islands Institute of Agrarian Research (ICIA).

In his speech, Pedro Cuesta emphasized the “great step forward that has been taken, with in-depth discussions and participation, “towards meeting and understanding the different approaches that each sector may have on this very delicate issue”.

PAlso, praised the structure of the days, since “it has allowed the extraction of practical and concise conclusions that can be used in the drafting of action plans and have not remained mere theoretical discussions”.

Over two days, researchers from different autonomous communities and technicians, that represent all the sectors directly or indirectly involved in this controversial relationship, have expressed their views on pastoralism, not only as an economic activity, but as an activity related to the territory and the conservation of ecosystems.

Like this, work was done on planning, territorial planning and management, the complex relationship between grazing and ecosystems in the Canary Islands, the use of this activity as a biodiversity management tool or its usefulness in fire prevention and control of exotic plant species.

The last debate focused on the socioeconomic and cultural perspective of pastoralism, and in the production of cheese in the different livestock systems.

The contributions made by speakers and attendees will serve as the basis for the preparation of a scientific report that clarifies and regulates the development of these activities according to their impact on our system..
