The Government of the Canary Islands contemplates that within the framework of the new Rural Development Program of the Canary Islands for the period 2014-2020, A specific subprogram is created to address the problem of abandoned agricultural areas through the creation of a Land Bank.
The current Rural Development Program 2007-2013 It is equipped to carry out different actions such as the reforestation of abandoned lands with native species; keeping abandoned land free of weeds, constituting true firebreak areas and, in areas undergoing desertification, reforestation with agroforestry species.

In the drafting of the new PDR, In addition to these measures that promote landscape diversity and biodiversity, Actions will be planned aimed at the recovery of these lands for cultivation that allow the exploitation of old abandoned family gardens..

The mechanism to be executed will be the Canary Islands Land Bank, which will allow owners and entrepreneurs to contact each other., as is being done in some municipalities of Gran Canaria, Tenerife, Lanzarote and La Palma.

With its creation both parties will benefit: The owners will receive a rent and improvement of their abandoned lands; and entrepreneurs will have a greater range of land to diversify crops.

In addition to this action, the recovery and improvement of abandoned lands will be achieved, protection of the soil against erosion processes, the recharge of underground aquifers, the increase in biodiversity, landscape improvement, fixing CO2 and continuing the fight against desertification.
