ONLY HIM 5,7% OF SPANISH FARMERS AND LIVESTOCK RANCHES HAVE LESS THAN 34 YEARS.
In Spain some 50.000 farmers have less than 34 years, a figure that only represents the 5,7% of the total number of people dedicated to these tasks and which indicates the degree of aging of the sector, according to the organization of the Union of Small Farmers and Ranchers, UPA.
According to those responsible for this organization, “serious aging” that the rural world in Spain suffers, it's a problem “especially worrying” compared to the situation in other surrounding countries.
Among the causes of this phenomenon, UPA has pointed out the lack of fair prices for agricultural products, the need for strong investments and the lack of public support for the incorporation of young farmers.
“Young people are the future of the rural world and of feeding more than 700 million Europeans, as well as the care and conservation of most of the territory of Spain and Europe”, the president of UPA Joven has stressed, Ricardo Bayo.
Among the demands of this organization are more support for young farmers, easier transfer of holdings, greater development of services in the rural world and the promotion of new information technologies in these environments.
Another factor that affects young people not choosing to enter the primary sector, lies in the reduction of competitiveness and the low profit margin that production has between origin and destination..
