Days Geotermia Gran CanariaThe Azores Archipelago covers the 22% of the energy it consumes.

The Cabildo de Gran Canaria has advocated taking advantage of geothermal energy, energy “more ecological” and “less polluting”, as revealed during the conference on the "Development of Geothermal in the Canary Islands", organized by the Insular Council for Economic Development, Energy and R + D + i.

In the date, the president of the Corporation, Antonio Morales, emphasized the importance of clean energies and that renewable energies “are the present”.

The meeting also featured experts from the Technological and Renewable Energies Institute (ITER), of the Canary Islands Vulcanological Institute and the president of the Shallow Geothermal Group of the Spanish Technology Platform for Geothermal Energy.

The Head of Geothermal Projects of the Geological and Mining Institute of Spain, Celestino Garcia, highlighted the importance of geothermal. “We will be the laughing stock of future generations if we do not take advantage of it”, declared.

The experts explained the multitude of options that the Canary Islands offer to take advantage of the heat of their land, not only Lanzarote, that by itself can generate all the energy it consumes, next to Fuerteventura –450 megawatts–, but Gran Canaria, both to install centrals and to take advantage of each hotel or facility that you want, in addition to not polluting, save, after the amortization of the investment, the 60% of the invoice.

García stressed that, besides being an energy “necessarily indigenous”, does not allow offshoring and breaks dependence on fossil fuels from abroad, has been rated by the United States Environmental Agency as energy “more ecological” and “less polluting” of all existing ones and without leaving an external trace.

He added that once the wells have been made for the entrance and exit of the water flow that will raise the heat to the surface, On the outside, the beginning of the pipes of the system is barely visible. “geothermal exchange” by which this heat is used.

The experts do not explain how the studies of the years 70, and even some of the 40, they have been progressively remaining “in the drawers”, or in some “shelf of this land”.

During the conference it was put on the table that in the Canary Islands potential analyzes were also carried out, although today they are “completely” unknown.

From the Cabildo they pointed out that the geothermal potential of the Archipelago is indisputable, either surface or depth, for power plants or self-consumption of individuals and companies, that you can install a harvesting network parallel to your foundation or perform a post installation.

Gran Canaria can also take advantage of the cold of the ocean for air conditioning. “A kind of mix with biomass, wind and solar energy that are a reality and not at all a utopia as some want to see”, stressed the president of the Cabildo.

In 2014, the megawatts installed on the planet exceeded 11.700 and the nearby Azores archipelago thus covers the 22% of your energy, Iceland on 27 and the Philippines on 24%.

In addition, there is low temperature geothermal, used for air conditioning, heating and heating of water in hotels or swimming pools, among other industries, and from that, the installation in the world exceeds 50.000 megawatts installed in more than 80 countries.

The conference confirmed that, “inexplicably”, in the Canary Islands its endogenous energy, his “enormous” geothermal potential, “is the great forgotten”.
