The Plenum of the Gran Canaria Cabildo approved the Territorial Special Agricultural Plan (PTE9) provisionally for final approval by the Government of the Canary Islands. It is a key document for the management of the primary sector and food sovereignty of Gran Canaria.

According to the Insular Corporation, the aim is to ensure the conservation of productive soils, avoid irreversible occupation of greatest potential soils and enhance agricultural sectors, livestock and forestry towards food sovereignty of Gran Canaria.

This plan aims to resolve the compatibility of agricultural activity in various areas of the island, totaling 58.000 hectares, which they were pending clearly demarcated areas because they are mixed areas of natural areas, with extensive forest, escarpments and areas to be protected, intermixed with other areas that could be used for agricultural activities.

The delimitation means increasing the agricultural land on the island in 8.279 hectares, 3.260 for the three agricultural areas as defined by the plan – intensive, rural and extensivas-, and 5.019 Extensive area as mixed agroforestry.

The cultivable area of ​​the island is so fixed in 30.019 hectares, of which they are in culture 10.348, so the growth potential is at present 19.671 hectares are abandoned. This surface uncultivated, 6.242 hectares have been abandoned in the last ten years.

In addition, in this quota over 30.000 hectares have been located 19 Agricultural Strategic reserves which must be located professional production farms, intensive or industrial because they are what allow the necessary facilities.

The rest are equally cultivable but being in spaces with certain territorial or landscape features, installing warehouses, alpendres, cisterns or access is subject to limitations and study of each case.

As for the livestock sector, the Plan establishes three types -professional, subsistence and income complementarily, and fixed cores ten farmers, were excluded areas, without farms today. These are close to the natural waters Water Toscal, Ingenio, because of possible conditions if any operation is established on the basis of the reports issued by the Ministry of Health of the Government of the Canary Islands in the future, among other causes.

These ten areas set for breedings added any case 407,17 hectares and are nuclei for installation of intensive livestock farms, as the facilities subsistence or additional income do not have to be limited in these areas.

The distances to urban and developable land and rural settlements ranges between 150 meters goats and cattle farms, less than 200 heads, rural settlements and 2.000 for larger farms pigs (from 360 Livestock units), both settlements as urban land and developable.
