Like this, The European Commission has opened a new public consultation to identify the current challenges and priorities of family farming in the world, with the aim of guaranteeing its viability in the future.

The Community Executive has invited citizens, organizations and public authorities to express their opinion until next 10 October, in preparation for a conference on family farming on 29 November in Brussels.

The Commission has already identified some threats, such as an unstable economic situation, the low level of income, difficult access to financing, the limited bargaining power with supermarkets or the competition with large agricultural companies.

In addition, points out some possible challenges of these family businesses, like the aging of farmers, living conditions and difficulty accessing social services.

In this sense, Brussels proposed some initiatives as financial support, reducing administrative burdens, promotion of agricultural products, the creation of new infrastructure or protection against unfair treatment in sales.

The EC will present the results of this consultation at the conference “Family farming: A dialogue towards a more sustainable and resilient agriculture in Europe and the world”, organized by the same institution on the occasion of the declaration of 2014 International Year of Family Farming by the UN.

With this initiative, The international organization aims to focus the world's attention on the role of family farming in alleviating hunger and poverty., food security and protection of the environment and biodiversity.
