THEY ANNOUNCE THAT THEY WILL GO TO THE COURTS TO CLAIM THE DEBT FROM THE GOVERNMENT OF THE CANARY ISLANDS FROM THE POSEI PARTS.

Livestock farmers, livestock associations, milk processing companies, manufacturers and marketers of feed and importers of forage from the Canary Islands, have established the Federation of Livestock and Industrialists of the Canary Islands, FEGAINCA.

This was announced by the advisor to the president of the National Federation of Food and Beverage Industries (FIAB), Jorge Jordana, and the general director of the National Federation of Dairy Industries, (PHENYL), Luis Calabozo.

Both have reported that the first measure that this Federation will adopt will be to go to the contentious administrative jurisdiction to claim the 11 million euros from the Specific Options Program for Remoteness and Insularity (Posei) of the Canary Islands who estimate that the regional government owes beef milk producers, sheep and goats from the year 2009.

Fegainca highlights that this non-payment “has had a very negative impact on the sector, ruining dozens of businessmen from the entire production chain linked to beef farming, sheep and goats”.

At the meeting held in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where the constitution of Fegainca was announced, the study was presented “Competitiveness of the Canarian livestock sector: challenges and solutions”, carried out by a research team from the Polytechnic University of Madrid between last June and the first half of July. The study sought to evaluate the impact of the measures contained in the Posei and their degree of execution between the years 1999 and 2009 at the request of the European Commission.

In the opinion of the federation, This report highlights the great possibilities of this economic activity in the archipelago and will serve as a basis for future actions..

Among the main weaknesses of the sector, the study reflects the deficit in public aid, which generates an imbalance with respect to other areas of activity that contribute much less to the gross domestic product of the Canary Islands and have more subsidies.

However, presents great opportunities, how to offer a quality product recognized by the consumer, whose demand in the local market is much higher than the supply.
