A group of people from the British town of Todmorden are betting on their total food sovereignty for the year 2018.
More and more people show interest in knowing where their food comes from and how it was produced. This is because there is more information suggesting that, for example, The consumption of genetically modified foods could be associated with certain health problems.
In 2009, the inhabitants of a small English town called Todmorden, They came up with a way to tackle the global food system, converting your town, through a self-sustaining model, in an autonomous territory, protected from industrial food production.
The goal they set for the year 2018, this project called “Incredible Edible Todmorden Project”, is to completely satisfy the food demand of its inhabitants. Currently, any space of land in the town is cultivated, from the medians to the existing parks.
Liam Hindhelwood, one of the designers who worked on the project, explains that this is the kind of design the world needs most: “design not only things, but everyday processes”.
The philosophy of this initiative is to achieve, through small actions, change a global food model that privileges economic profits over the quality of products and that is above our health.
The project is based on the idea that 'Acting creates hope', in this case, demonstrating that small collective actions can confront global production systems with which we do not agree.
The inhabitants of Todmorden are clear. Returning to the above constitutes an example that undoubtedly creates culture. That return to community origins, breaking with the harmful mass production characteristic of the 20th century and taking responsibility for our shared future, It is the flag of our project, said Hindelwood.
