The Association of organisations of producers of bananas of Canary Islands (ASPROCAN) will participate, starting tomorrow and until next Friday at Fruit Logistica 2014, In Berlin. The Canarian representation will attend together with the rest of the European plantain and banana producers with the aim of promoting the graphic symbol of the Outermost Regions (RUP) as a distinctive element of reference quality for the consumer and that differentiates it from bananas from third countries.

The president of the Canarian organization, Santiago Rodriguez, highlights that the event will allow us to emphasize the example that the Canary Islands Banana sector represents as the main agricultural economic engine of the Archipelago, at the same time that the main problems of the sector will be made known, marked by strong competition from bananas from third countries after the process of tariff reduction on said imports.

RodrĂ­guez will reiterate the fundamental role that European consumers play in guaranteeing the subsistence of the sector and will highlight the differentiation that the presence of the graphic symbol of the OR represents., which only applies to those products that have been generated under the strict quality standards required throughout the European Union and in conditions that contribute to preserving the environment, sustainable development, the subsistence of the common heritage and, definitely, the economy.

Also, French producers, through the general director of UGPBAN, Philippe Ruelle, will emphasize that products subject to the OR graphic symbol are an example of social and environmental responsibility, while guaranteeing a sustainable production model under European standards, which helps preserve the landscape and sociocultural heritage.

In this respect, will highlight that the conservation of European plantain cultivation goes far beyond mere economic issues., since it entails the defense of a form of work that has been maintained for generations and that has served as a livelihood for broad layers of the population in the outermost regions..

From the Portuguese association GESBA, its President, Jorge Dias, will highlight the role of these productions in an increasingly globalized world, becoming the guardians of a flavor, uniqueness and quality protected under the graphic symbol of the RUP.

Precisely, This year concludes the plan to promote the graphic symbol of the ORs that has been developed for a period of three years and whose main objective has been to highlight its importance, offering information about the product from its origin and allowing sustainable and responsible productions to be placed in their rightful place, from a social and environmental point of view.

In this line, During the next three days, European plantain and banana producers will carry out promotional actions within the framework of the fair, focused on professional meetings and the tasting of typical products from these regions, at the same time they will provide attendees with informative material.

ASPROCAN will share a stand with the French producer organizations of Guadeloupe and Martinique, UGPBAN, as well as the Portuguese GESBA, that brings together those of Madeira.
