The Minister of Agriculture obtains the commitment of the Minister to address this issue.
The Minister of agriculture, Livestock, Fisheries and waters of the Canary Islands, Narvay Quintero, has obtained the commitment of the Minister of Agriculture, Food and environment, Isabel García Tejerina, to create a working table to analyze the additional POSEI file and see to what extent the Government of Spain can commit to the next budgets.
“Next week we will hold a meeting to see what agreements we can reach to maintain a contribution that is fundamental for the sector”, Quintero said after the meeting with the minister in which he was accompanied by the deputy minister of the Primary Sector., Abel Morales, and the former Deputy Minister of Agriculture, Alonso Brook.
During the meeting, García Tejerina conveyed to the counselor the Ministry's commitment to Canarian agriculture, as demonstrated by the fact that in recent years this Department has contributed more than 85 million euros in active agricultural policies, forestry and rural development.
In addition, The minister has indicated that thanks to the negotiations held by the Ministry of Agriculture in Brussels, The Government of the Canary Islands is guaranteed the help of POSEI and has great flexibility within POSEI to establish lines of aid to the agricultural sectors that need it most in the Islands.
The Minister recalled that it is the Government of the Canary Islands that is responsible for the programming of the PSOEI, It is up to that autonomous community to take the first step in terms of budgetary effort aimed at completing community funds..
Also, The Minister has shown a special interest by the tomato producing sector and the new support line designed by the Government of the Canary Islands for this crop, ensuring that will defend the new proposal before Brussels.
In this point, García Tejerina recalled the strong support received by this sector in the different help lines, in which the General Administration of the State has played a relevant role, providing aid funds for POSEI for an amount of more than 42 million euros, to which we must add transport aid and support for Rural Development Programs.
On this last point, The Minister has shown her commitment to work together with the Canarian Government to analyze the factors that could make more competitive tomato cultivation in the Canary Islands.
Other aspects on which the Department of agriculture, Food and environment has provided national funds in recent years. It has been carried out through the Sectoral Conferences on Agriculture and Rural Development.. In total they have been transferred 1,5 million euros for animal and plant health, agri-food industries and in the field of productions and markets.
