The invention is part of the project Future Food District, directed by Carlo Ratti, who says the Urban Algae Canopy marks the culmination of 6 years of research.

According creators, when the combination of technology and biology converge, algae have a better space for photosynthesis, especially when the sun shines more brightly, which helps reduce the transparency of the cover and to provide more shade. "At one point, transparency, the color and shading canopy potential will be the product of the interrelationships between climate, microalgae, visitors and digital control systems ", Ratti said.

The structure is able to control the flow of energy, water and carbon dioxide based on weather patterns, the movements of visitors, and other environmental variables. It is the first of its kind in the world and, once completed, the canopy will be able to produce the equivalent oxygen 4 hectares of forest.
