FOR THE FIRST TIME SOME HONEY FROM TENERIFE WILL COME WITH THE DESIGNATION OF ORIGIN SEAL.
The Cabildo of Tenerife has called the sixteenth edition of the Regional Honey Contest organized through the Casa de la Miel, a contest that registers one of the largest participations in the country.
This new edition of the contest, which will be held between 23 and 25 October, It will be the first in which productions certified under the Protected Designation of Origin seal are presented. (DOP), with which this year's honey is already marketed.
This distinction makes Tenerife the only island that has this quality figure that offers the consumer a certified product with a differentiated origin and quality., and that allows the creation of a collective brand that links the image of the product to the territory.
The honeys submitted to the competition must belong to a batch collected in the Islands during this year., by beekeepers whose farms are registered in the registry of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries of the Government of the Canary Islands. Due to the low production of product as a consequence of the drought, and with the aim of encouraging participation, Lots will be accepted from 50 kilos.
Contestants may present a honey sample with the same exploitation number., except the farms of 50 or more hives, which may present two types. The samples collected may participate in the coastal monofloral or multifloral categories., mountain or summit. In addition, there will be a presentation prize, to which honey packagers who only package products from the Canary Islands may opt..
Coastal honeys are those produced in hives located at levels below the 600 meters and are based on barralla blooms, coastal tajinaste, cachuela, banana and avocado, among others. Mountain honeys occur at variable altitudes, between the 450 and 1.250 meters, concentrating on chestnut blooms, oregano, hinojo o brazo. As for summit honeys, come from levels higher than the 1.100 meters and have their origin in high mountain blooms.
