FEDEX and ACETO pay tribute to the former Vice-Minister of Agriculture and Livestock of the Government of the Canary Islands, Alonso Brook.
The Provincial Federation of associations of exporters of horticultural products of Las Palmas, FEDEX and the Provincial Association of Harvesters - Exporters of tomatoes Tenerife, ACETO, after unanimous approval at the Extraordinary Meeting, have carried out the act of recognition – tribute to the former Vice-Minister of Agriculture of the Government of the Canary Islands, Alonso Arroyo Hodgson.
The act, which took place at the Fedex headquarters at the León y Castillo dock in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, had the participation of the presidents of Fedex and Aceto, José Juan Bonny and Francisco Echandi, respectively, as well as members of the Board, the spokesperson for the Platform for the Defense of Tomatoes and several guests, including the Minister of Agriculture of the Cabildo de Fuerteventura., John stearic, the previous territorial secretary of the ministry in the province of Las Palmas, José Luis Pérez Afonso and the previous head of the plant protection section, Manuel Marrero Ferrer.
In his speech, Jose Juan Bonny, thanked and recognized Alonso Arroyo for the work done, as well as its management, to avoid the disappearance of a key sector of Canarian agriculture.
Also, the president of Fedex highlighted, among other achievements, the preparation and defense of the Strategic Plan for the Canary Islands Export Tomato sector, at a crucial time for the activity.
On the other hand, Alonso Arroyo thanked the sector for the deference that the sector has shown him and expressed that he felt very honored by the recognition of a job well done..
Arroyo recalled the circumstances in which the Strategic Plan for tomato exports was carried out, making special emphasis on the preparation of a very conscientious document with which to justify to the European Commission the urgent need to approve the support measures.
The work team that carried out the x-ray of the sector was key to achieving a good document in record time, Arroyo pointed out..
The former vice-counselor outlined some of the anecdotes that occurred within the framework of the negotiation, both with the Commission and with the Ministry of Agriculture, for the inclusion in the POSEI of a new aid per hectare to export tomato producers.
Arroyo ended his speech by sharing that This sector cannot disappear and provided some important keys as: the review of aid to the hectare, as well as aid for the modernization of farms included in the PDR (Rural Development Program) and operational programs, and compensation for transport costs to alleviate the ultra-periphery of the Canary Islands.
Alonso Arroyo reiterated his gratitude and He said 'I am proud of the sector because I have worked with pleasure and I feel the satisfaction of having fulfilled my duty'.
Alonso Arroyo Hodgson
Born in 1945 in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where he attended high school and pre-university. He obtained the title of Agricultural Engineer, phytotechnic specialty, at the University of Valencia and 1975 He received his PhD from the University of London, at the WYE-KENT County College of Agriculture.
In 1976 The INIA hires him and the following year he approves the national competitions for career civil servant, of the Scale of Higher Graduates – Agrarian Researchers of the INIA.
In 1987 is appointed General Director of Research, Agricultural Extension and Training of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of the Government of the Canary Islands.
From 1991 alternates in the different legislatures the positions of counselor and deputy counselor in the Government of the Canary Islands. In 1999 He is elected 1st vice president and advisor of the branch in the Cabildo of Tenerife.
In 2000 obtains the seat of Senator elected for the island of Tenerife. In 2004 returns to the Government of the Canary Islands as Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Livestock where he holds the position until his retirement in 2015.
In his long professional career he has held countless relevant positions in international organizations., national and regional and has been the author of numerous articles in specialized publications.
