THEY REPORT THAT THEY RECEIVE 0,30 EUROS PER KILO THAT DO NOT COVER THE PRODUCTION COSTS OF 0,45/0,50 EUR.
The president of COAG-Canary Islands, Rafael Hernández, together with the island secretary in Gran Canaria, Juan Hernandez, have made the announcement as a measure of protest against the “inconceivable” situation of the sector.
Hernandez stated that “We are receiving a price for potatoes at origin that is above 0,30 EUR. That is between 0,15 and 0,20 euros below the cost of production”.
In addition, commented the President of COAG, In the peninsula and in Europe the price paid by distributors is double the production cost and in the Canary Islands it is less than half, “even when the cost on the islands is double that on the peninsula”.
In this point, criticized the “trade wars” between the different companies and insisted that “You can't wage wars by kicking farmers”.
The protest event will take place this Friday at 11.00 hours before the doors of Mercadona de Miller Bajo, where farmers will hold a rally and give away the 5.000 kilos of potatoes.
