Táganan Amogojo is an exclusive wine of Anaga that captivated the US president when he tried it at a dinner in New York.
It happened last year. During a dinner at New York restaurant Estela, Barack Obama, He chose a bottle of wine to accompany your dinner Táganan. And apparently he was pleasantly surprised.
Táganan is the name that three adventurers decided to give the wine extracted from grapes from areas Taganana, Tenerife.
Currently it produces a group of about 15 people of Santa Cruz winegrowers hand the company Envínate, responsible for advising wineries nationwide but also to develop their own projects in the Peninsula and the Islands.
Jose Angel Alonso is the first vintner who contacted the young entrepreneurs of Envínate, Roberto Santana, Alfonso Torrente, Jose Angel Martinez and Laura Ramos Jiménez Marchante, to begin work in Taganana.
The historian Santiago Yanes was the one who informed Roberto Santana of the existence of good and historical grapes in the Anaga.
So Santana soon go the mountains and discovered the estate of Jose Angel. This farm belonged to his great-grandfather and he took care of it in 2010.
In the field of property practiced polyculture, but the vine is the most important element. Since Envínate became part of the production, much has changed the way we work on this side of Taganana.
“We have stopped using herbicides and systemic products as we now use biological and we give greater care and dedication to the grape”, explains Jose Angel Alonso.
Envínate counseling allows you to work the land with the assurance that it will be able to sell the harvest and, In addition, You know that the product will receive an exquisite treatment.
Táganan success can be checked through the numbers. The first year of collaboration between José Ángel Alonso and Envínate resulted in a collection 3.000 kilos of grapes and the production of two varieties of wine: Tiágnn Prsela Margaelagua, a red wine, and Táganan Plot Amogoje, White.
Two years later they have collected 14.000 kilos of grapes and there are four varieties of wine offered for sale through the work of 15 winegrowers.
Currently, All these wines can be purchased via the internet at a price of about 26 bottle euros for the Canary Islands. In Spain they can be found in restaurants in Madrid and Barcelona, and abroad, triumph in Australia, Japan, Germany, Switzerland, England, United States, Portugal e Italia.
And is that in just two years of history broth Táganan, the great chef in the world have come to appreciate its quality.
Martin Berasategui Spanish and Roca brothers have bottles in their restaurants throughout Spain, while international and media chefs like Gordon Ramsay completes the letter of its establishment in London with these wines.
In United States, Estela restaurant not only has grown grapes Jose Angel Alonso and its neighbors, but also Spanish José Andrés stocks usually has at his restaurant Jaleo in Washington.
Production is limited. Only an average is obtained from 900 bottles per parcel. Envínate just sent, for example, a Australia, solo 42 containers each variety.
Envínate emerged in 2008 after three years of studies of its four components that met studying enology at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche, in Alicante.
In addition to advising wineries, currently they have several own projects that aim “grow the world of wine in Spain”, explains Roberto Santana.
The aim of Envínate is to grow gradually as a company, but above all, working closely with the winegrowers of each zone to arriving.
For Táganan, the grape, after harvest in Anaga, he moved to facilities that gives the winery Soagranorte -Suertes the marquess in the municipality of La Orotava to Envínate and there wine is produced.
It is a table wine that does not have designation of origin, but neither winemakers and winegrowers of Taganana seems that this amount will.
To that belonged to the Designation of Origin Tacoronte-Acentejo wineries where it is produced should be in this area of the island, but now the company can not afford.
“We seek to produce custom wines and non globalized, they know to wood and natural yeasts and you notice that they are actually grown in vineyards”, Santana sentence.
“The soil is what gives magic to these products”, Santana added. The field Jose Angel Alonso has a 40% slope and it strains are grown with the traditional method of rootstock.
It works without mechanization of any kind and, in fact, Vintage is very hard because the grapes are loaded back on slopes of sandy soils unpaved for about ten minutes.
Alonso fresh hillside looking west, the Atlantic Ocean, with a whitish volcanic soil, ideal for growing white grape as it helps fix the acid touches.
A few 20 people make left for pick grapes in the field of Alonso each September, never before day 10. In the best years they can pick up some 90 grape bags, more than 4.000 kilos.
list, ford, malvasía, albillo, outsider, moscatel, mulatta or Vijariego are just some of the grape varieties grown in this area. Some date from the time of the conquest by the Spaniards and many others were introduced from Portugal.
Currently, explains Jose Angel Alonso, the 70% production is white grape, Meanwhile he 30% It is for red wine.
“What we want now is to consolidate the project in Taganana but we know that the lands of Tenerife have a lot of potential so we do not rule out working in other areas of the Island”, explains Roberto Santana.
Two years of work and a risky gamble has served to be amply rewarded, not only with the news that Barack Obama tasting their wines and stays pleasantly satisfied, but the Spanish and international awards have not been expected these years.
